Cocktail format, informal dress ************************ Who’s doing your taxes ************************ Ken, I received a call the other day from the owners of an alarm company that are preparing to sell. They have been using TurboTax to do the corporate tax returns for the last 20 years, but they weren’t sure how to handle the tax ramifications of the $1.2 million dollar sale. They offered to pay me for up to 45 minutes of my time if I would just “show them how to enter the sale into TurboTax.” TurboTax is the DIY of the accounting business. If TurboTax gets you what you need, great, but we provide value added. If an alarm customer believes that they can take something out of a box, set it on their kitchen counter, and have an alarm system, so be it. If you think that TurboTax can handle the tax reporting of something as complicated as your business, then don’t let anyone talk you out of it. The conversation reminded me of a publication that the IRS sent out a few years ago. It was called the “Taxpayer Roadmap.” Its intent was to make dealing with the IRS as simple as “riding the subway.” We travel these routes every day. Trying to ignore the issue doesn’t seem to work out too well. Doing it yourself? Well that strikes me as a very poor idea. And, while I’m on a roll, too many of you are using accountants that simple don’t understand [or care about understanding] the alarm industry.
