Question

Ken,
This might have been covered before but I don’t recall it.  When your business is being evaluated for sale, how much does the primary alarm panel used in most installations effect the value of your company.  For example, will using DMP equipment that you must be a dealer to buy/install adversely affect your multiples versus using Honeywell or DSC that anybody can buy at most distributors.
Our company is thinking about becoming a DMP dealer but I want to look at all the angles that I can think of before making any decisions.

Lot's of criteria is considered when doing an alarm company valuation [which you can get done quickly and inexpensively at WhatsMyAlarmCompanyWorth.com] and the equipment you use is certainly one of the considerations.  This is especially so if you use equipment that some or many potential buyers will not be able to repair, replace or sell, or for that matter will want to.  As to what extent the multiple may be affected, consider the cost in material and labor to replace the equipment that doesn't meet a buyers expectations or needs.  That's the deduction you can expect, assuming the buyer is prepared to move forward at all.
Bottom line, to maximize your value use readily available equipment commonly used in the industry.

With reference to a companies selling price, if all you have to sell is the monitoring value of your company it's been poorly managed and you'll get what you deserve.  You can bet the systems and the customers are not going to be worth a top price.

Most alarm companies have only their RMR to sell, whether it's monitoring or some other RMR service, such as service and inspection.  The more RMR the more you have to sell and the more your company is going to be worth.  The Standard Form Agreements are designed to maximize your RMR services.
