RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IPAD APP AND RMR INVOICING

Ken,
I am using an app for the iPad called 'Form Expert'. I have had a very good experience with it. This app allows me to store all documents on my google drive account and I can email a completed copy to myself and the customer upon completion.

Ken,
Hank asked for input from security dealers using Quickbooks.  We're not a large company that requires customized software and QB works perfectly for us.  We've been using it since 1998 and it handles our memorized transactions (billing for monitoring), A/R, A/P, payroll, inventory, estimating, job invoicing (with progress billing), purchase orders, customer letters, statements, etc. beautifully.  We don't use Intuit's online backup, we just use QB's built-in backup scheduling to back up our data (frequently) to a second local HDD and I can also back up to an offsite PC at our office in another city.  I use Windows Remote Desktop to access my main server from our remote office so I can work in QB in real time and I use an iPad app called Jump so I can do estimates from the client's kitchen table and email the estimate to them instantly without having to take along a portable printer.  And if I'm in a hotel room I can use my iPad or laptop to work directly in QB regardless of my location.  Whatever we have needed, we have always found a way to do it with QB.  Couldn't be happier.

Ken,
I've used Quickbooks for 10 years for all areas of my business. It's really great for the RMR invoices.

For billing and A/R, the best system I have seen is Sedona.  It not only handles the billing and RMR issue it has all the other tools that an alarm dealer needs to do the accounting for an alarm company.  It is the best system that can handle Jobs, Service, multiple systems on sites and all of the issues with recurring billing.

FOLLOW UP ON CAN A CS LEGALLY DO BUSINESS IN YOUR STATE FROM NOV 7, 2014 ARTICLE

********************
Ken,
You are claiming that central station are not required to have alarm lic. burg or fire, to do business meaning ALSO SELLING, even though the statue specifically states THAT "COMPANIES SERVICING, MAINTAINING, REPAIRING, INSTALLING, AND yes SELLING are REQUIRED TO HAVE ALARM LICENSE"..... and most likely that Midwestern central station IS SELLING but not installing. So what I would understand from rules and regulations for example in your own state NY or NJ is that central station would be required to have license, period. ( Even though they may use contractors to install systems or sell them, they STILL SOLD system, where it was a REQUIREMENT to be licensed as a company hence having qualifiers and while 9 yards)
But you're saying that they may not have to but all of us companies/small businesses here, must have alarm licenses?  Is not this a double standard and self contradictory.
Can you please follow up on this.?
Thanks

The inquiry was whether a nationwide central station needed authority to do business in each state.  Authority to do business is not the same as being licensed.  I didn't address the license issue, though many of you may have thought that I did.  I'll address that now.
Though most states now have alarm license requirements only about 19 require a license to monitor.  You can find the states here:  https://www.kirschenbaumesq.com/page/alarm-law-issues  That's statewide licensing.  There are many local jurisdictions, villages, towns, cities, that may have a registration requirement that may as well be considered a license.  But many jurisdictions do not have a license requirement for monitoring.
Most of the nationwide wholesale monitoring companies have licenses where they provide monitoring services.  I am not aware of any jurisdiction taking punitive action against any central station that isn't licensed, other than to require a licensing fee to be paid.  But that doesn't mean such action hasn't been taken - I just don't know about it.
A central station could take the position that local or even state licensing for monitoring accounts within the jurisdiction infringes on the central's right to conduct commerce, which is protected by the federal Interstate Commerce Act.  I am not aware of any court decision that has addressed this issue.
So the issue is, if a central station receives signals from an account within a particular jurisdiction and calls a public agency, i.e. police or fire, is that central station doing business in that jurisdiction.  If it's doing business in that jurisdiction is that business significant enough to require the central to obtain authority to do business in that jurisdiction [which would be a state] and finally if that state requires a license to monitor accounts does the central have to get the license.
Keep in mind that failing to obtain authority to conduct business in a state is a lot different than failing to obtain a license required by the state do perform licensed activity.
