Ken,
When faced with the manufacturer asking for information about the customer I would always give our company's phone number, email address, and billing address. No customer information was given to the manufacturer.
If a contact person was needed on the application I put the name "Ralph".
If the job was sold I would update to the customer's information. I never had problem doing this and never informed the manufacturer that this was my procedure.

That might have worked while you were in business but technology and services have evolved so that end users are in direct contact with manufacturers.  Sometimes the end user system is directed through manufacturer's receivers before a signal or data makes its way to the end user who is self monitoring, or the central station who is professionally monitoring.  Manufacturers may require customer information so they know where the signals are originating from or who is permitted access to the data or who is permitted to provide data entry or modification.
Some manufacturers insist on end user information and insist on having direct relations, including invoicing and collecting for the services as well as changes to signal response.
The point is that if you, the dealer, decide to use certain equipment and certain services, you need to be careful to understand your relationship with the manufacturer.  I guess it's the same issue with a Dealer Program or even a central station relationship.  Consider a camera manufacturer who requires its cameras work only through the manufacturer's portal and the manufacturer provides the equipment and the monitoring services.  Whether the Dealer who sells and installs the system owns the customer or the manufacturer owns the customer may not be clear.  If the "dealer agreement" terminates who owns the customer and will the cameras work if the Dealer is no longer in contractual relationship with the manufacturer [or Dealer Program]?
If you don't like the answers, then why get started with this manufacturer or vendor in the first place?  I understand brand loyalty, relationship loyalty, general laziness to make changes and often the cost of making changes, but not selling your soul to the devil or getting into a deal that you know you don't like.
Can it be that some manufacturers or dealer programs are so great that its worth putting up with all the terms and conditions and risks?  You tell me.
