Doing a flow test as others have pointed out can create problems. There have been instances (even though it may not be your fault) that when you do a flow test back up pressure can build up in the system and leaks or even sprinkler heads can 'pop' and leak and flood buildings. I also would not suggest to manually trigger the switch inside the valve assembly. That's not a real time test and if you mark it down as it tested OK and then later on the actual flow which fails within the pipe you could be on the hook since you didn't perform a complete 'real-time' test.(it should be also noted if you do a flow test and water is distributed during that test you could also be on the hook for a slip and fall case as Ken I'm sure would concur here.) Bottom line is get the sprinkler co. involved and let them do their job! If it’s not equipment we normally purchase, supply, or install it’s not to be touched !!! Jason Alcock Wayne Electric & Alarm **************************** Response **************************** It's great to want to be helpful to your subscriber; why save the subscriber the expense of bringing in the sprinkler company and coordinating your testing of the fire alarm? How is that different than changing an electrical switch or outlet, something you or your tech is not likely to agree to perform? It may be true that getting your fire alarm testing over quickly is important to you, and that can be the only motivation to step outside your expertise [and license and maybe your insurance coverage], it's not worth the risk; better to spend a little time letting your subscriber know it needs to coordinate the two trades. If the sprinkler company fails to show then maybe you should skip the water flow test and note that on your report, requiring a successor visit that the subscriber should have to pay for.
