Follow up on CO detectors from July 25, 2014 article
***************
Ken;
    Regarding Bob Williams' note on CO detectors and their threshold, if I can remember correctly (and some of you old guys please lend a hand), when the CO detectors hit the market, possibly in the Chicago area, there was a plethora of "false" indications of CO, so much so that the responding fire departments needed relief.  The 70PPM came out of an intensive study among industry, UL, health and fire department personnel intended to be the best compromising number.  Although human saturation rates have not changed (the physical condition of a person is a major factor in CO tolerance), the technology of detectors has improved and are naturally more accurate, so possibly the time for a new study has come that would indicate updated standards indicative of the surrounding environment.  But, to use a couple of old phrases, be careful what you wish for, and don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
    Thanks for your contributions;
A. J. DeMarzo, President

    Regarding residential CO detection requirements in the State of California, refer to attachment for specifics and as summarized below:
    Carbon Monoxide Detector requirements that became effective July 2011 -
All single family residenses are required to have detectors installed by 7/1/11.
All other residential unit types (condominiums, apartments, hotels) by 1/1/2013.
    This only pertains to buildings that include fossil fuel burning appliances (furnace, stove, etc.)  Please read the attached Word document for more information - The attached Senate Bill is for reference only.

    I guess we don't want the fire department breaking into a house when no one is home only to find a faulty CO detector.  The Standard Form Contracts cover this exposure.

Employment Law Question
******************
Ken,
We are a young business trying to grow, which brings up the subject of employees. We have run into a few obstacles and can't seem to get straight answers from anyone. Would you be able to outline the basics we need to know in terms of proper hours and pay, salary versus hourly, benefits, requirements of the employer, what to have on file per employee, etc? Or can you direct us to articles you may have already done about this or webinars, etc? That would get us into the right direction for us to get our homework done.
Thank you,
Anonymous

    You think there are a lot of legal issues to consider for the alarm industry?  Well, employment law is even more a pain.  Leave it to the employment lawyers.  Lucky for the alarm industry we happen to have an employment law expert, former Administrator Law Judge Ruth Kraft.  You should have an employee handbook and you can get it from her.  If you're not getting enough emails from me you can sign up for our firm's Employment Law newsletter, authored by Judge Kraft.  Sign up by clicking here.  https://www.kirschenbaumesq.com/page/employment
    We have many articles on employment law posted on our web site.
