Ken
Thank you for all you do without fees for all of us, like your daily newsletter and posts.
Cases like this bring back a case against me in the late 70's, a sprinkler system installed by others in the 1920's needed to be repaired and tested.  We got the contract, did the repairs, tested with FDNY, it passed, and we started monthly inspections of the system as per NYC Code.  A couple years later the business had two small fires in one week, obvious arson by a disgruntled employee, in both cases one sprinkler fused and put out each fire.  A few months later I was sued by Fireman's Fund Insurance for water damage to reclaim what they paid out ($3k), the case was dismissed based on my answer and the attorney was told by the judge "if you bring a case like this to my court again I'll hold you in contempt".
At the time I was able to answered the summons and appear without an attorney, however, had the case not been dismissed an attorney would have been needed.

Ken,
Regarding why legal fees are so damn high.
Judges used to be working lawyers. They twist themselves into mental knots so silly lawsuits can go on endlessly and other lawyers can send those 4 page bills that break up their “work” into six minute segments. It’s called professional courtesy.
          You’re welcome.

Hardly; most judges forget they were lawyers.  There’s lots of reasons judges invite continued litigation, feeling sorry for lawyers isn’t one of them.

Ken,
It is so nice to read your acknowledgement of the contributions all of us in our industry make in dedicating so much to the safety and well-being of others,
It will be comforting for you to know that many of us pay tribute to our employees 24x7x365 without having to wait for a special holiday.  As examples, in addition to the standard holidays, we give everyone the day off on their birthday; we pay their full salaries if they are injured until their disability checks start arriving; we pay for their training; and we acknowledge their contributions publicly and in writing, because this is the right things to do.
It is conducting business by the "Golden Rule".
Richard

Ken,
Though I've never met you in person, I feel like I know you from reading your Alarm Dealer communications for the past 40 years. Today's reading was a bit of a departure as it reflects more of your non-lawyer "one-of-us" persona, and therefore attracted my eye as my wife scanned thru the letter and read it to me. I thought to myself, "you know what, maybe I should be listening to this guy after all." He gets it, and really makes sense.
Thank you Ken, I promise to be a better reader and listener in the future, and maybe even make a contribution to your library after 52 years in the business. After 10 years in Aerospace on the Appollo program, I would never have dreamed that I would be doing this for the next 52 years of my career. Just goes to show you, "never look a gift horse"........,
          Best to you and yours
Best Regards,
Gene G
