Comment on contracting outside your license from January 6, 2020 article
**********************
Ken:
You are incorrect regarding the State of Florida. A Statewide GC License is required in here. I hold both a statewide Fire Alarm License and a Statewide GC license for exactly that reason. In Florida a Licensed specialty contractor cannot sub-contract beyond the scope of his License.
Respectfully,
Michael Kerry

Mike you are correct, I was in error.  The advice was correct but I mentioned that Florida did not have a license for General Contractor, and it does.  Chapter 489 Florida Statutes.  Thanks for bringing this to everyone’s attention.

Comment on Slow or no police response from November 29, 2019

Ken
Slow or no response from first responders is a common complaint from end users. Here is my scenario:
Customer wants to know “Why are I paying you for police response when they took almost X hours to get here?”
My response is:  “Excellent point Mrs. Jones. We only dispatch the police.  I will be glad to give you the central station report in which is recorded, dated, and time stamped. With this information you may now go to the local precinct and file a civilian complaint.  We can email this to you.”
This is the termination of the conversation and the end of the complaint to me.

There should be more to the response.  Keep in mind that customers are assured in almost every advertisement for alarm services that police response is a natural consequence to a dispatch.  Customers expect police response when their monitored alarm activates.
Is it really enough to say, “we don’t control the police response and if you don’t like it take it up with them?”
Of course that is the reality, but it’s not something the alarm industry emphasizes when promoting and selling alarm services.  The Standard Form Agreements make it clear that you have no control over police response, or no response, and that the RMR contract payments must be made even if police response is terminated.
Engaging in this type of conversation may be the perfect time to explore other services that your subscriber may want to supplement the security service or enhance the security service.  By that I mean, supplement by providing guard response or runner service.  Enhance by providing verification, ECV, audio or video, which may increase the level of priority police response. Every conversation with your customer offers the opportunity to update the system and offer more services.
