Comment on alarm.com’s new shooter detection system from article on September 22, 2023
****************************
Ken,
One of our subscribers has a gunshot detection sensor on its roof; it was installed by NYPD.  It is a small box in elevator machine room plugged into a receptacle for power, then a wire ty-rapped to anything along its path until it goes through a hole and outside to the sensor.  To make certain no one tampers with it, they wrote "Do not touch NYPD" on it with a marker.  Install looks like a DIY job.

Ken,
Once again, thank you for all that you do for the industry!
What is a old timer to do?
Software Webinars, a topic never heard of when I started in the alarm business, late 1960's. Started using a computer for creating drawings and word processing in 1987, DOS based, and self-taught how to use.  The first time I printed a drawing, it was the an administration building at Lasagna Airport, large long building, I did the drawing to 1/16 scale, and then set the output to 16 units, so it printed at 1 inch equals 256 feet, the drawing was the size of a postage stamp. I used to move fast and be ahead of the curve with many of these things, I remember going to the NYC Buildings Dept with plans, drawn multicolored by my pen plotter and plan examiners came over to look and be amazed, now, if you don't have computer printed plans they may not be accepted.  Now we have multiple programs designed specifically for alarm companies, sharable, windows based, that should be product proven before sale.  I started with a program called Q&A for word processing, designed my own forms that were building specific.  If you were going to a building to perform an inspection each device was listed, check boxes and a blank line to write in issues, the form started you off at the top of the building and walked you through the building so nothing was missed and in a logical order, we still use forms like this.  Now that I am thinking about retiring and selling the business, do I reinvent my wheel and start over with new software that the buyer may not use?  Things used to change slowly, you had time to adjust, now, if your software is two years old it is outdated, even alarm panels are considered old and need to be changed or updated every few years, that is why I love servicing Acme's they will outlast all of us.  I developed a computer interface for Acme's and other old coded electromechanical panels and devices so you could see the timing of the pulses and some other aspects, then service the stations before they become an issue.
Of course, we use K&K Agreements and keep them updated and current!
What is an old timer to do?

Keep in mind that when you do decide to sell your business the buyer is going to be interested in seeing all kinds of records, and won’t be too happy having to rummage through a bunch of boxes with loose papers tossed in over a 40 year period.  Keeping with the software necessary to run your business and carry on with your life isn’t easy, and as you get older, only gets harder.  Keep on trucking.
