Is UL lowering standards of alarm industry

          I am on a ‘rant’ so please forgive me!
          As I’ve been at this vocation (I don’t consider it a business but a ‘calling’) since 1969 when they tried to crow bar in the front door of my parent’s home (we were the 2nd house in the sub-division and there was only ONE way into the sub-division as the other area was a wheat field). I took it upon myself to call alarm companies and nobody wanted to talk to a 15-year old kid, I ended up going to the local electronics humongous store and the ham shop guy helped me to put together the parts to ‘invent’ the system for my parent’s home. Complete with Ademco #39 door contact switches and a Radio Shack photo beam. As the system shortly there after on Shabbos, returning from Synagogue, found a note left by the local Police Officer who heard the local 10” Ademco bell sounding (until the automatic shut off turned the bell off). He went to the rear entrance and search the house as the glass had been broken and door was open, thus triggering the local bell.
          From that point on, I wanted to PROTECT my family and eventually customers.
          How does lowering the standards of the standby power time for customers who DEPEND upon us help to make us a PROFESSION???
          I have been to and VOTED at NFPA – being astonished at how sub-standard rules are being attempted and then voted down?
          Now, according to my local UL inspector/auditor, the requirement is only 8-hours of battery backup for communication power at the premises with the excuse being that is what is offered – what will occur when PEOPLE DIE???
          Immediately, alarm owners will go to their contracts to point out the Ken clauses to absolve them of responsibility – but, how does that HELP the people, the VALUED SUBSCRIBERS who THOUGHT THEY HIRED SOMEONE OR SOMETHING THEY COULD DEPEND UPON WHEN THE CHIPS WERE DOWN???? Helping to make their world a little safer.
          I have been there when my Central Station ran for over a WEEK on generator – ensuring customers were still monitored and all was well with them and their family.
          I have been there when the horrible ice storms hit Texas, causing rotating power outages and then, we discovered there was so much water in the gas lines the generators had to be switched to propane to function.
          Oh, well, I guess this is how Jeffry Zwirn makes a living as a consultant.
          I’m just SOOOO discouraged! WE SHOULD BE BETTER THAN THIS!!
          I guess that is why I, as the President & Founder of Jade Alarm Co. have invested in AES and KP radio alarm networks.

          We were on vacation last week and stayed at the Doubletree. We were told housekeeping was no longer a standard service and that I had to request it when I booked the room. 5 days without housekeeping. America no longer strives for excellence. It’s not what can we do for you it’s how little can we do and still take your money. This is a civilization circling the drain.

          With age comes wisdom.  Roman philosopher Cicero affirmed this with, “For there is assuredly nothing dearer to a man than wisdom, and though age takes away all else, it undoubtedly brings us that.”
          As far as UL lowering standards I’ll leave that to the experts.
