AHJ issue over response time for multiple fire alarm signals
***************************
Ken,
I have an AHJ who is being a stickler with the 90 seconds to report to dispatch on a fire alarm activation. Our issue is they want to trip the system every 30-45 seconds during a live test and expect the central station operator to notify dispatch within the 90 seconds for each consecutive signal. This not possible as the operator must call, relay all the information to the dispatcher, document the account before they can contact dispatch again for the next signal.
Just asking if anyone can assist with NFPA code references for multiple fire alarm signals being reporting and if anyone has also encountered this with an AHJ.
 Name withheld.

Can any fire alarm dealers or central stations respond to this inquiry?  Does every signal need to be dispatched when they are multiple signals from the same panel?  I think that is the issue …

Comment on Additional Insured from article on September 1, 2023
**********************************
Ken,
Another good thing about K&K contracts is that in many cases the additional insured requirement being present there is all that’s needed to trigger that coverage, regardless of whether the alarm company’s customer ever provides them with a Certificate of Insurance (COI) as proof.
The reasoning for this is that many Commercial General Liability policies include “blanket additional insured” wording, either in the main policy wording or via a similarly named endorsement, which basically states that additional insured coverage is automatically provided to any entity that has a written contract requiring it.
While many policies have that blanket wording built in, and not all do, it is still worth requesting and getting the certificate AND corresponding policy wording or endorsement, but by virtue of having your contract in place requiring the alarm company be Additionally Insured on their customers CGL coverage, there is a good chance that such coverage exists automatically.
We include that same blanket additional insured wording in our alarm insurance program because it makes life so much easier for our alarm company clients when they get certificate requests from their commercial customers (gets them same-day COI turn-around).
 Thanks,

This is extremely important information; thank you Larry.  Additional insured coverage is one of the more challenged provisions in the K&K Standard Form Agreements, and perhaps the most common provision to be ignored after the contract is signed.  Think about it, how many of you actually get the Certificate of Insurance naming you as additional insured?  Not may I am sure.
Blanket additional insured coverage is automatically triggered when the insured signs a contract agreement to add an additional insured.  Good to know when you have a claim by your subscriber, it’s carrier claiming subrogation or a third party claim.  You will have coverage with the subscriber’s carrier even though you may have not gotten a Certificate of Insurance.
Larry’s alarm insurance program is even more important for you because it also covers those who you agree to name as an additional insured, and forgot to actually get named.  Think that this is not a vital provision in your insurance policy?  Thank again.           Try out this scenario:
You sign the central station dealer agreement in which you agree to indemnify the central station in the event your subscriber sues the central station.  You also agreed to back that indemnity up with your insurance coverage.  Claim comes in, central station demands you provide your indemnity and, because you forgot to get the central station named as an additional insured your carrier tells you that you don’t have coverage for your indemnity; you’re on your own.
The automatic Blanket Additional Insured is not in all E&O policies.  You may be able to request that endorsement for your policy or it may not be offered at all.  Point is, make sure you ask your broker about this language.  If you don’t have it then be extra careful to get the additional insured certificates you agree to get and, even if you didn’t agree to get an additional insured certificate, make sure you get it for any one you agree to indemnify.
This is such an important issue I think we are going to schedule webinars by the insurance brokers to discuss their programs and practices.  Watch for the announcement.  Brokers contact me to set up schedule.

Central Stations series: Why You Should Be Monitored By Our CS
Hear from the leading central stations and “Why you should be monitored by” that central station.  The topic of remote operator monitoring from outside the central station facility and the dynamics that issue presents is sure to come up.  The question you need to be asking is why isn’t your central station participating and why are you still using your central station if it’s not participating?
