QUESTION:

Hi Ken,

We are experiencing many customers inquiring about switching to internet phone service and having their alarm connected to the internet phone line.  Despite advising against using a VOIP/Internet phone line for alarm system communication some of our customers are making the switch to internet phone service. We give our customers a full explanation of the reliability issues involved with alarm communications over VOIP lines. Do you have any type of waiver or contract form to have our customers sign acknowledging that they have received the information and regardless of our recommendation they are choosing to have the alarm connected to a VOIP / internet phone line?

ANSWER:

The Disclaimer Notice was designed for this issue.  Get that form and use it on every installation.  You order it at www.alarmcontracts.com

Some alarm companies incorporate disclaimers in their contract forms.  I suggest a separate form.  Too often subscribers claim they were fraudulently induced to sign an alarm contract, or didn't understand its terms [not really a good defense].  A separate form, clear and concise, is going to be more easily enforced.

My disclaimer form deals with VOIP, that additional equipment and services are available, and false alarm fines and permit fees.

The form is well worth your investment and use.
