Question:

Jennifer,

How long do I have to keep patient records for Medicare?

Thanks,
Dr. S

Answer:

Good question, and depends on what you participate in. Medicare Managed Care Providers are required to retain records for 10 years.  Most everyone else has a 6 year requirement. This is in addition to any other potentially longer state law requirement you may have to abide by.  HIPAA (federal applicable statute here) preempts state law where state law is less restrictive.
