Question:
Jennifer,
I'm parting ways with my long time manager and she has changed all of my passwords and locked me out. What do I do?
Please help. Dr. F
Answer:
She isn't your ex-wife or son in law is it? Because I see this ALL THE TIME, and plenty of times the manager is also a family member - even stranger. This is THEFT. Let's label it correctly as a matter of first priority so we can properly sort our options. My best advice - file a police report. Or give a clear deadline when you are filing a police report, clearly communicated - this usually works, and can be done through counsel - call me for help. Okay, so, you do not want to get the police involved, we have plenty of other civil (monetary) labels to throw on this conduct, and getting an attorney involved does often correct the conduct, not always, no guarantees. Clearly what we are facing is an unhinged and irrational individual, motivated by revenge and chaos, and this person needs to be navigated, perhaps, delicately or with a strong approach - personality dependent. We'll have to look at the circumstances to best advise, but from the above you can discern how we would recommend handling.
Before you get to the separation stage, it is always best to plan in advance - have documentation in order and a back up plan if the individual you are separating from has proprietary access or controls. Next time (or for those leering over this wreckage) let's plan in advance. Have a question for Jennifer? Email is best. You can reach her at Jennifer@Kirschenbaumesq.com.
