She has an alarm company client and she wondered if she was handing their sales tax returns correctly. She explained that Federal Income Tax is pretty easy because all that she had to do was to type the number into Turbo Tax and it did the work. If you are relying on that kind of advisor who relies on software, Googling, or calling strangers and asking questions, you should think a minute, and then call someone who knows. State sales tax is complicated; all 50 states have their own rules, and even cities and counties get into the act. If you get bad advice and screw up you could easily end up owing taxes and penalties on 3 -5 years of sales, and penalties an interest on the tax.
