I am a avid reader of Kirschenbaum’s articles, and frankly I’ve seen more whining over DIY systems from professionals than I have ever expected. DIY is here it’s here to stay and rather than being butt hurt over it it’s time Everyone took a hard look at how they’re going to differentiate themselves in the marketplace. I’ve never met a top dollar customer that has ever considered a SimpliSafe or Ring system as their primary means of protecting their family. The SimpliSafe or Ring customers are the folks I don’t want as customers; the ones just smart enough to put it together but not smart enough to realize that there is professional services that provide much greater security. I equate them to someone who decides that it’s best to operate on themselves when they need their tonsils taken out to save a buck; certainly not my customer. Sure they may have a widget or a gizmo that looks all pretty and shiny but at the end of the day they install their motion sensors upside down and the door contacts fall off when the sticky tape ages If DIY is truly hurting, you, McDonald’s is hiring every day. You can take your dedication to providing excellent customer service, and make sure that my sandwich gets properly assembled in the morning or if nothing else making sure that my order is correct. Bottom line, be available to your customer, return your phone calls, maintain high ethical and moral standards and train your sales people and installers. If you do those things DIY can’t touch you. Anthony Vanhorn The Security Guy Gleason TN ********************** Response ********************** I’ve long advocated that the DIY market would not make much dent in the professionally installed security and fire alarm market. But I don’t think it makes sense to avoid the DIY products because many of them work and can be used to supplement a professionally installed alarm system. The Ring doorbell camera is a great product for the price, and guess what, most customers could use a hand installing it and programming it, so why not offer it rather than tell them you don’t have a substitute product at close to the price. Same with the wireless cameras; not all customers can afford hard wired cameras. There should be a middle ground instead of hard wired or none at all. If you’re in the house putting in your system why not enhance the system with additional product and services, even if less reliable, as long as the customer understands the limitations and alternative. That’s a better idea then not offering the products and finding out that the customer picked up the products over the Internet. I am sure opinions run the gamut from no way to DIY is all you install; it’s a matter of business plan and model. Whatever works for you is best when it comes to this issue. Just make sure the customer knows what it’s getting and what’s available, and you do that best by using the proper K&K contracts. ************************* WEBINARS SCHEDULE and REGISTRATION: SOFTWARE // CENTRAL STATIONS ********************** SOFTWARE WEBINARS: With all the discussion, and dissatisfaction, about management software our first webinar series is by software providers offering comprehensive software programs for the alarm industry. ********************** Title:Fieldhub:All In One Operations and Accounting Software For Security and Fire Integrators When: October 3, 2023 noon ET Why attend: FieldHub is a comprehensive software program that integrates proposals, planning, warehouse inventory management, scheduling, field technician mobile applications, invoicing, accounting, tracking systems and devices, creation and linkage of a central station account, and much more Who should attend: managers and owners Presented by: Miles Fawcett, Founder and CEO of FieldHub Inc. 202.417.8196; miles@fieldhub.comwww.fieldhub.com Hosted by: Ken Kirschenbaum, Kirschenbaum & Kirschenbaum PC Register here:https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/2290942861013931612 *********************** Title:Innovative Business Software: operating software for central stations When: October 5, 2023 noon ET Why attend: Innovative Business Software is central station solution to smooth operation and integration Who should attend: managers and owners Presented by: Jen Kolind, President and CEO of Innovative Business Software Inc. 469 556 2822; jens.kolind@innovative247.com www.innovative247.com Hosted by: Ken Kirschenbaum, Kirschenbaum & Kirschenbaum PC Register here:https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/2817426411948243036 *********************** Title: WorkHorseSCS When: October 11, 2023 noon ET Why attend: Alarm business operating software solution for Sales, Field Service, Customer Service, RMR (Recurring Monthly Revenue), Electronic contracts and Digital Signatures, all conveniently housed in one unified platform.
