designing fire alarm for Electric Vehicles
************************
Electric vehicles are presenting new risks when it comes to fire alarm design and detection.  I don’t know if NFPA or building codes have considered the new risk, so excuse me if I am late to the discussion.
Electric vehicles, including cars and electric bicycles are powered by rechargeable batteries,, Lithium, I believe, the according to multiple news reports it’s not uncommon for these batteries to explode, ignite and start fires.  Vehicles are generally parked in garages.  Let’s talk about single family homes first.  I suspect that most residences that include smoke detectors as part of the alarm system do not cover garages; I believe NFPA and building codes require smoke detectors outside bedrooms or maybe in bedrooms.  Higher end systems would likely include smoke detectors, maybe heat detectors and CO detectors too, in different areas of the house, such as kitchen, boiler room or stairwells.  Garages pose a different challenge because smoke and CO detectors might be affected by running vehicles and heat detectors may not activate soon enough.  I suspect that garages are usually not included in areas of protection. [I have using that word, protection in alarm design context]. But if electric vehicles are parked, stored and charged in the garage that area is likely at greater risk of fire than most other areas of the house. I suppose one could argue that a fire starting in a garage would be detected before it made its way into the living space of the house, and that may or may not turn out to be the case.  That risk consideration should be made by the subscriber, not you, and your recommendation for fire alarm coverage in the garage should be part of your design and subscriber’s decision not to include that protection noted in the Disclaimer Notice and the All in One itself in the Schedule of Equipment and Services.
I thought of this for a few reasons, but one of them was a call I got from someone in Florida who was complaining that his condo association would not permit parking his new electric vehicle in the building’s indoor garage, located below the apartments.  The condo board considered the electric vehicles too much a potential fire risk.  It would be the same for an electric bike with a Lithium battery.
I’m we’d all like to hear from the fire alarm experts with opinion on this topic.  By the way, [sorry I can’t help myself] don’t be too surprised that come Nov 4th and a Trump victory, the demise of the love affair with electric vehicles will come to an end, though the electric bikes may stay popular.  One can only hope.
