Comment on when you should retire from article on March 23, 2024

Ken:
I find it most interesting the “WHEN SHOULD YOU RETIRE” article…..
There are entrepreneurs and then there are entrepreneurs…….
It all depends upon the person’s commitment to the customers and if they are still having FUN!
Ken, the person mentioned about being approached a couple of times – HA! I’m getting WEEKLY calls or emails and every once in a while an actual letter!
As far as ‘working for the new folks’ – he (or she) has to remember the old saying….
WE LOVE THE WAY YOU HAVE DONE THINGS AND GROWN A SUCCESSFUL COMPANY AND WILL NOT CHANGE ANYTHING!
The check is handed over to the old owner…….
The check is CASHED!
In the mail is a letter to the old owner of the CHANGES CORPORATE WANTS DONE!
I’ve talked with ‘former owners’ and they are all MISERABLE working for the new ownership!
So, here I am, pounding out this letter of my 2-cents at the ripe age of 70 and still having FUN at helping to protect lives and property!
**  Ken – please ask this person to contact me as I’m a member of ESTA and we WANT more committed entrepreneurs and he (or she as there ARE female owners!) might enjoy our ‘gang’!
   Respectfully,
Joseph (Joe) Pfefer

Your observation about retiring and expecting to work for the buyer is, for the most part, accurate.  New owners have their own ideas and agenda; your participation is useful for a transition, for sure, but ultimately buyers want their ideas implemented and their way.  You build a business and most likely you're not use to "taking orders" [as opposed to suggestions, which you may or may not accept].
It's OK to sell; it's OK to retire.  It's OK to start a new chapter in your life, whether it's a new venture, business or activity.  Thinking you can retain control over the company you sell and mesh with your future plan is unlikely to succeed.  I'm certain there are exceptions, but you need to carefully evaluate your prospects before jumping into something you may not really be prepared to accept.
On a more positive note, there is definitely time to sell your business and you need to know when that time has come.  It was probably a long haul up that ladder; the way down happens faster.  If your RMR is heading in the wrong direction and you can't figure out why or do anything about it, time to consider something else.  Sell off those accounts, wait out the one year guarantee, and end the stress and uncertainty.  Running a business comes with all kinds of responsibilities and you need to be a pretty good juggler to keep the lights on.  You can't beat taxes, death or aging, which comes with slowing down and having different and new things to focus on besides your business.  Hopefully these other things are in the good or great category; you deserve it.
