Comment on death of digital dialers from article on September 24, 2024

Ken
In response to Dennis Calvey’s questions and statements; I have a couple of IT turned Central Station tinted answers.
The issues that would arrive in a data level interface system is the concept of interruption of service / signal reporting. When UL and NFPA weigh in on signal reporting they don’t specifically speak to the language used, just the transport of the signal, most notably that the signal requires as few ‘hops’ as possible to get to the central station within the time limit. In addition to the time constraint, anything within the communication path must be configured and protected just like the alarm system reporting the signal. MODBUS or BACnet devices interfacing with the network would have to be kept to the same standard as the fire alarm system and critical messaging would have to take absolute priority. (e.g. “Fire Alarm system is reporting an alarm, nothing else can talk on the network until it’s done.” Or “Fire Alarm system is in alarm, activate egress notifications for the occupants of the building”).
There are provisions in place for an alarm system to interact with building automation, think air handlers and door closers, but in the case of reporting KISS is usually the best option here. All of that is for fire, intrusion is a far freer animal and should report as much contextual information as possible. I’ve personally spoken with manufacturers and some automation software vendors about the usual reporting formats and how they’re potentially a rusty cog in the system. As it sits there’s so many different types of communication path: POTS, Cell, Network, RF, carrier pigeon. In the instances where the system is reporting via a network connection there’s no reason it shouldn’t be sending the central station as much data as possible. But manufacturers and software vendors seem to be hung up on using communication formats that are still adhere to phone line limitations. From an IT and development adjacent perspective I look at alarm systems and realize we’re still doing dial-up things on a broadband connection.
