Ken-

I was hoping you would correct the statement in this blog that cable voice service is not acceptable.

Joel Kent’s comment that “Nothing is farther from the truth” is simply wrong.

I have spent several years working with NFPA 72 to resolve this issue. This issue has been resolved in NFPA 72 2010 by defining what is required of ANY phone line, whether POTS or VOIP. ALL phone lines must now be provided by Managed Facilities-based Voice Networks. Cable voice meets all the requirements in NFPA 72 and is therefore acceptable for fire alarms for both residential and business.

NFPA recognized that previous editions of the code cannot be used for guidance since they are obsolete. The old prescriptive requirement to use the PSTN is no longer applicable, since the PSTN is no longer a specific entity. The PSTN today is comprised of hundreds of privately-owned, highly-interconnected voice providers.

NFPA recognized that copper telco telephone service is being rapidly phased out (10% per year), and needed to set performance requirements instead of the standing prescriptive requirements since many new alternative phone providers have emerged and AHJs could not possibly make determinations on all of them.

Again this issue has been resolved by NFPA. It would be very helpful if you could correct this misinformation.

To Joel Kent, there are many manufacturers that have listed “solo” only IP solutions for fire, which include but not limited to  Honeywell, SilentKnight, DMP, DSC, Bosch.  They have been listed for years.

KEN

I LIKE YOUR EMAIL POSTING – I TRY TO READ THEM DAILY.

THERE ARE POSTS SAYING THAT “POTS” LINES ARE 50% GONE AND WILL BE END OF LIFE BY THE FCC 2014.  I HAVE NOT READ ANYWHERE WHERE THIS IS AN OFFICAL RULING BY THE GOVERNMENT. WERE TALKING 100’S OF MILLIONS OF HOMES AND BUSINESS WHO STILL

USE POTS LINES.  I WOULD THINK THIS WOULD BE THE BIGGEST NEWS OVER THE OIL IN THE GULF..

CAN SOMEONE OUT THEIR POINT TO AN OFFICAL FCC RULING?

IN MY WORLD THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO COULD CARE LESS ABOUT CELL PHONES AND COMPUTERS AND STILL GET TV FROM AN ANTENNA AND ARE HAPPY.
