Comment on Who owns your subscribers\' central station data from  October 23, 2013 article

Alarm Companies are paid to secure clients, but do not invest in securing their own business. Our association, representing the actual alarm dealers, continuously lectures alarm dealers to get their own phone lines. We have also been exposing the selling of client list by Central Stations. Cities need client list to get permit fees and collect false alarm fines. Some central stations who either receive payment for such list, or are in support of City alarm ordinances, either voluntarily or receive payment for your client list, without your knowledge.

Once your client releases information to you, their right to privacy is lost. Once you submit your information to the monitoring station, you right to confidentiality is also lost, without a upfront contract protecting your information.      Although legislation, in Arizona, was passed that states a court order is needed for Police to demand information, this does not prevent information from being given, or sold, to Police departments.

I think alarm dealers need to wake up and secure their most valuable asset, their client lists. There is nothing stopping these central stations from volunteering your information, without your knowledge.

Your agreement with your central station should make it clear that your subscriber information is confidential and not to be shared or used for any purpose other than in your interest or with your consent.  Also, be sure your agreement provides that you can have access to and obtain all your electronic records, on demand.

If you have received some consideration for your committment to remain with the central station and place all or a specific number of accounts at the central then be prepared to be held to that agreement.  \"Consideration\" is often found in reduced pricing or incentive loans or outright payments.
