More On CO Dectors - Call To Change UL

*************************
Ken
A.J. De Marzo [from August 4, 2014 article] has a good memory and in the early 90's, way before my time, Chicago  had a" Temperature Inversion "that did cause thousands of alarms. The UL thresholds were increased at that time and they did have alerts in the standard until 1998.
What l am asking UL to do is NOT to change the threshold but to RESTORE the alerts that where previously in the standard that l feel should be based on the published EPA exposure limits which include parts of the population that where NOT INCLUDED in the UL studies e.g. pregnant women, the elderly, asthmathics, people with heart conditions, etc.
In fact we have just written a letter to the chief engineer at UL in charge of UL 2034 and 2075 standards requesting they REINSTATE these Alerts back into the standard. There are currently alerts for low battery, sensor end of life, etc.Why not low CO exposure ?
If any of your readers want a copy of our letter to UL and the supportive EPA documentation please contact JR Mc Cotter our Chief of Technical Services at jamesm@briscoeprotective.com.
I feel it is our "responsibility" as industry members to make the public, the officials that pass the legislation and the AHJ's aware of the limitations of both CO detectors and alarms. That's why we wrote the advisory.
Having them find out by reading the fine print on those tiny user manuals after a purchase is made or a job is completed is not my idea of a proper warning. It may work for "liability"purposes but not for "responsibility" purposes in my humble opnion.
I hope others will join me in appealing to UL to reinstate these alerts. Email me at bobw@briscoeprotective.com and l will let you know how.
Regards,
Bob Williams
