Question:
Hi Jennifer,
I have an inclination that my employer is pushing an RVU bonus on me to make my bonus harder to achieve, because I don't really understand how many services I need to render and value attributed. I also do not have control over patient selection and my schedule.

Answer:
It's definitely possible! I have seen systems deploy RVU models in a manner where the thresholds are so high it is unlikely a human requiring rest and having any semblance of family time would have a difficult time meeting. In that scenario, I do believe the system is using RVUs as a bait and switch. Distract you with numbers which are not easily quantified or considered at the time of execution, and once you have committed, it is too late to see the goal set is unachievable. You can combat this from happening by paying attention on the way in and questioning the RVUs per service, service average by frequency in your department. See whether you can temper towards an achievable target where you can foreseeably recoup an additional 20-30% as a bonus... Happy to help.
