have you made Protect America's hit list
**************************
When does legitimate competition cross the line to deceptive business practices, trademark violation and just poor manners?  I don't have the answer but maybe it's more than a legal or ethical issue.
I suppose one way to find out if your alarm company has "made it" in this industry is to see if you're on Protect America's hit list.  According to its website Protect Amercia [www.protectamerica.com] describes itself as follows:
"A rich history.  In 1992 Thad Paschall founded Austin, TX, based Protect America, Inc. Since its conception, Protect America has been providing state-of-the-art home alarm systems to American families.  Protect America started as a small home security provider and has become one of the fastest growing security companies in America with customers coast to coast! To date, Protect America, Inc. has protected nearly half a million families nationwide and is ranked in the top 10 of residential home alarm systems installations!"
Protect America is headquartered in Texas and holds licenses in lots of different states.  You can check its licenses on its website at http://www.protectamerica.com/help/state-licenses.
So what's the "Protect America" hit list.  Well, first of all, that's what I call it; no official industry list.  Here's how you find out if you're on the "list".  You google [I suppose any Internet search will work] your company name.  Leave off the full entity name, such as corp or Inc.  Instead of finding your company and posting it on top of the search, you'll find the website for Protect America.  If you look at the search bar it starts with Protect America but if you keep moving the curser to the right you'll find your company name.
Give it a try.  Let's start with ADT.  I put in ADT in my seach.  Here is what came up on top:  Protect America.  Here is the site I was taken to:  http://www.protectamerica.com/security-value?agent=i11078&affkey=CompetitorKeywords&SE=Google&Campaign=Competitor%20-%20New&cikw=%7Bkeyword%7D&MatchType=%7BMatchType%7D&device=%7Bdevice%7D&keyword=%7Bkeyword%7D&competitor=adt&gclid=Cj0KEQjw5sHHBRDg5IK6k938j_IBEiQARZBJWqReY5z7jaYbr5VX3nFGT8Ev-Dxm86Ug7NPHKbhL0_EaAn3k8P8HAQ
    Note "competitor=adt".
The second listing that comes up is Simplisafe.
    http://simplisafe.com/security?gclid=Cj0KEQjw5sHHBRDg5IK6k938j_IBEiQARZBJWqnRKcKidXEEy4Fnym7CTmegoMC5tqGfmfpY9SM_oXUaAlzQ8P8HAQ#pcrid=189065744773&utm_campaign=gs.Competitors.Exact&utm_term=adt+home&utm_content=ext.5&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_network=g&utm_device=c
But there happens to be a big difference between the two competing websites.  If you check Protect America's website you will find a comparison between Protect America and ADT.  Simplisafe doesn't go that far.
So, to see if you've "made it" in the alarm industry, search your name and see if you come up on a Protect America website designed and intended to steal your potential lead.
What can be done about this?  I haven't thought that far ahead and it will likely be expensive to "go legal".  But what does come to mind is "what goes around comes around".  So if you're looking for a way to generate leads maybe a good idea would be to contact your web designer and add a few meta tabs with Protect America in it.  If you can compare your system and prices to Protect Amerian then feel free to educate the public.
    Any other ideas?
