Question:

Jennifer,

I got called for jury duty! I can coordinate my schedule to attend if need be, but not to be picked for a long trial.  I have to be at my practice. What do I do?

Dr. P

Answer:

Dr. P,  there is no magic formula to getting out of jury duty. You have to go in. My advice is, if you believe your absence will constitute a strain on continuity of care, or if your practice is located geographically where your patients will be denied access to care if you are absent for an extended period, notify the court of these potential strains and constrictions on your patients. There are no guarantees, but if you make a compelling case, you have a good chance of being released from duty.

There are other legitimate reasons for excusal – for instance, if you serve as primary care giver to a young child or elderly person.
