Follow up on 3G shutdown
*****************************
Ken,
If a company started the process early enough, there should never be a reason for a customer to be unaware of the pending shutdown.  This includes the AT&T shutdown scheduled now for Feb 22, or the Verizon planned shutdown later this year.   We started this communication and replacement process years ago, and have replaced all but a few customers that have not responded.  This communication included emails to those we had an email on file, multiple letters sent to the protected address and the billing address, and multiple phone calls with message left, if customer had capability of leaving a message.  For our MPERS customers, when there was no response to the above, we called and spoke with or left messages with their call list of family, friends or neighbors to let them know that the device would no longer function after the Feb 22nd date (if AT&T).  We documented each and every action on the customer account. All our customers are set up for automatic test, and we already had a process in place for notifying customer of failure to test.

The article does indicate that it will not help with voice, but will work with data communicators.  We ended up with about 300 (of 17,000) cell communicator customers that have not been changed out by the deadline.   Either due to non-response from customers, or lack of available equipment to change out systems.  None of those customers have failed since yesterday’s deadline.  We pinged several customers systems and they are still communicating after yesterday’s deadline.  So we are assuming that the T-Mobile roaming partnership is working for these customers.  Atlanta has a strong T-Mobile network, so it is possible we will have all remaining customers viable through June.  There is no guarantee that all systems will be protected under this agreement.  Some may not have option of T-Mobile service in their area.  AT&T must have had this in the works, but waited until the last moment to alert anyone.  Provides some breathing room for the industry.

Ken,
Would have been nice to have such a clear and concise summary document, like the one attached above, available for dealers ahead of the 22nd sunset date.  Would have saved a lot of confusion with customer communication and expectations of what would happen on the scheduled sunset date.  And certainly would have kept us from making a mis-call on the T-Mobile roaming situation.
Many dealers, like ourselves, have been communicating with our customers for years that they cannot expect service past the scheduled sunset date of February 22nd.  That date has come and gone, and we have had zero radio failures of the remaining 300 radios (of 17,000 original number of radios) not yet replaced. So these still active customers, without a radio replacement, either understand that the deadline was a soft deadline, not a hard one, or they think we were disingenuous about the date.  We continue to replace radios, and will finish the AT&T portion in the next three weeks.  We have made so much progress on the Verizon deadline, unless there is a significant issue with radio inventory, we will finish months ahead of that scheduled sunset date.

I know this is a tricky question but, has AT&T advised what if any cities the older 3/4G will still work in for the near future?

"waiting to the last minute after getting almost 2 years of advance notice is not a smart practice."
2 years alright.  2 years of Covid and backordered radios.
We've upgraded 75% even with those setbacks, but the remaining 25% are just now starting to show interest in getting it done because it's been on the news lately and we've offered the upgrade for free all along so it wasn't money that held them back.  It's the customers that waited until the last minute.

Further confusion in the whole ‘Sunset’ mess:
A well inform source from the criminal justice system told me that certain courts are freaked out with the fact that a number of criminal ankle bracelets that are out there on criminals that have been released from jail rely on the 3G cell network  . With that said, criminals may get   a ‘win-win’ here if their ankle bracelets fail to track them & they burglarize a premise that relies on a 3G alarm radio that fails to function they’ll be able to get away Scott free with whatever goodies they steal!!
Any thoughts or input on this out there?
Danny

"waiting to the last minute after getting almost 2 years of advance notice is not a smart practice"
This was not a fair statement as some of us are on platforms such as alarm.com that can't get 4G radios because of the supply chain disruption.  We've been waiting 18 months for 4G radios and our Verizon wait has so far paid off.....Our distributor has over 25,000 on backorder and they are a small distributor compared to ADI.
LAN modules are available and we have been switching some to that if we can but the customer loses the capabilities that they had with the smartphone app.
