Question:
Jennifer,
Is my medical practice required to have a crash cart? We do not do any surgery or invasive procedures. What's the law?
Dr. J
Answer:
We have confirmed with the NYS Board of Medicine that in New York there is no law or regulation that mandates that a practice have a crash cart. However, we were advised that it would be inconsistent with "best practices" (read very foolish) not to have one unless the practice could ensure that all drugs necessary for typical emergencies ("crashes") were immediately accessible.
The Board of Medicine further provided that there is no list of requirements or proposed items for a crash cart. It was recommended that a practice consult with an ER doc or with an emergency department to determine what equipment and drugs to have on hand in case of a patient emergency.
