comment on sales tax

Ken
I would like to throw in my two cents worth on the sales tax issue discussed in your article on October 31, 2018. After an exhausting audit by the State of Massachusetts about 5 years ago we have been set straight on doing business in multiple states that we are licensed in (our business is in Massachuetts). The tax law was clear for us as a Fire, Security service company.
Sales tax is applicable for materials and labor in the state that the transaction was performed; not in the state the company is incorporated or resides. We had to pay our penalties (do to good bookkeeping it was very small) for not charging the proper applicable State sales tax.
If you have customers who claim to be exempt/resell it's best to be sure and have that document prior to any transactions. (our experience show'd in our favor since we did have them on file-it would have been much greater assessment without them) We certainly learned a lot from the process and have changed some of our procedures (though slight) it was a real learning experience.

Check with your accountant and be sure to comply with sales tax laws. In addition to worrying about audits, keep in mind that when you sell your company the buyer will want assurance that all sales tax has been paid and most states have laws requiring the buyer to give notice to the taxing authority of the sale, which can trigger an audit.

Fire jobs in Dade County, Fl
**********************
Fire alarms in Dade County Florida are governed by Article III of Chapter 14 of he Code of Minami-Dade County. The Board of County Commissioners of Miami-Dade County is the governing body and the AHJ is the chief fire official responsible for approving equipment, materials, installation or procedure. A fire alarm company was asked to provide a copy of its contract with the subscriber. Rather than produce the contract we prepared a Memorandum of the Fire Alarm Agreement, a simple form that confirmed the existence of the contract and some of its terms.
If you need the Memorandum form contact our Contract Administrator Eileen Wagda at 516 747 6700 x 312. Cost is $300. [it's not on our Order form at www.alarmcontracts.com]
