Combined Systems
****************************
Ken-
    My company has received a verbal go-ahead to integrate existing fire alarm, security and gas detection systems in 15 separate buildings into a single IP based reporting center in a campus safety office.  The equipment we will install  to interface the systems is using IP technology to interface the outputs of existing systems and have them report to a command center at campus safety.  What contract should I use for this type of installation?  We will also need a service contract and will inspect the fire systems annually.

    If you want to know which of the Standard Form Contracts you will need to start with before you modify it to accommodate multiple locations, it's the Commercial Fire All in One.  You have to use this because fire is one of the systems.  You can use the fire contract and add "lesser" [as in lesser regulated and lesser (sic)  exposure" systems, such as intrusion, access control or cameras.  You can't start with the Commercial All in One [which doesn't cover fire] and use it for fire.  It's intended for all security systems, other than fire.

comment on Simplisafe

Ken;
     I read the email about SimpliSafe.  I have heard it advertised on various  radio shows also, so I went to their site to see what they offered.  Not surprisingly, right on the first page of their site when you click on "Shop Now," scroll down to the bottom of that page where they offer "Refurbished systems at 25%-30% off."  I suspect a great deal of their refurbs are the systems where people purchased them and then realized what they bought was more like a toy than a for real wireless security system.  I was flipping through the stations on XM radio and I heard Glenn Beck advertising for them and he said that he installed a SimpliSafe alarm in his house.  This is a guy who has armed guards protecting his property 24/7, and most of them are ex-military (Navy Seals, & Special Forces) and he relies on a toy for his electronic security?  I don't think so.  When I read about some of the awards given to crime victims who sue the alarm companies, I figure it's only a matter of time before SimpliSafe is SimpliFinished.

Question- non disclosure agreement
****************************
Ken.
    If we are considering approaching another dealer in our area to sell our accounts, do you have a non-disclosure or confidentiality agreement we could have them sign before entering into discussions? Our concern of course is that if the sale doesn’t proceed, we could be caused harm if our accounts were to learn we are trying to sell them. If you post this one, please sign it as

    You need a Confidentiality Agreement and I include a few other protective features [that I haven't seen in other similar agreements].   Charge is typically $600 and you can get it by calling our Contract Administrator Eileen Wagda at 516 747 6700 x 312

Question - fire alarm down
********************
Ken,
    Thanks for your forum.
    I have a question for you and your readers. I am in Florida, I was called to a thrill park (go carts, video games, rooms for birthday parties, etc) it has a hybrid burg and fire alarm system with voice evac (DS7400XI) installed by another company. The system is completely down, probably a lightning strike. The existing company has said it cannot repair it and it cannot be repaired. I may give bid to replace system. In Florida the responsible alarm company is required to report the nonfunctional fire alarm to the local AHJ if not repaired in 24 hours. It has been weeks. I informed the owner of this requirement and told him the AHJ would probably require a fire watch till it is repaired. My question is, what should I do? It is not my customer. If I report him to the AHJ he will hate me. What am I legally required to do? I suggested that he call his current company and remind them of that requirement. The company is a very large regional company, they know better.
    Any thoughts from anyone?

    Until this subscriber becomes your subscriber or you work on the system I don't see why you are responsible to the AHJ.  If you were paid for an inspection you may have obligation to notify the AHJ.  As far as the sub hating you, better that than the AHJ hating you.
