Question:  Carbon Mnoxide Law
********************
Ken,
Can you help me with the new Suffolk County carbon monoxide requirements law?  When does it take effect for private owned buildings, and what does it require?
    Thanks for any help,
Alan C. Dove, President

Don't be surprised to see CO laws enacted all over the country.  I turned to fire alarm expert Bob Williams from Briscoe for a response to this question:
***
Ken,
Currently Suffolk County has a few Laws in effect regarding Commercial CO Devices:

1. Brookhaven Town has passed a CO ordinance, which is an amendment to their Fire Code, that is effective now and I believe a copy can be obtained on the town Website.
2. The county passed the Steve Nelson Safety Act which applies to all County owned
and Leased Buildings and is being phased in based on building size.
3. Just this week the Town of Huntington, where Steve Nelson passed in Feb from CO
exposure, passed an ordinance covering places of assembly.
It is important to remember that municipalities only have jurisdiction over certain occupancies e.g. these ordinances do not apply to School Districts.
The state has CO legislation that has passed both houses and is a awaiting the governor's signature that would apply to all commercial buildings statewide.
We at Briscoe have been very active in the legislative process and so have the Local Alarm Associations. Please either contact your local alarm association or you can call JR McCotter our chief of Technical Services at Briscoe (631) 864-8666 or email him at jamesm@briscoeprotective.com
Briscoe has also issued an advisory to all local officials on the "Limitations of Carbon Monoxide Detectors and Alarms" which I provided to you and I suggest you publish it for the benefit of your readers and their customers.
    Warm Regards,
