A recent report before the Public Health Council delivered by Dr. John Morley, medical director of the NYS DOH's Office of Health Systems Management on the "adverse events" of office-based surgeries this past year (480 such events, including 36 deaths within 30 days of a surgery) served as a reminder to the NYS healthcare community of the looming deadline for accreditation for those practices conducting "office-based surgery". Any practice utilizing more than minimal sedation in the office setting is required to become accredited by July 14, 2009. In New York, approximately 100 medical practices have applied for accreditation since the new law requiring accreditation was enacted. This means that there will, in all likelihood, be a "mad dash" for accreditation by practices rushing to meet the July 14, 2009 deadline.
